The first thing one does when their kitchen starts smelling is to use some commercial carpet cleaner deodorizer. However many a time, you find that these products that emit a smell that is really sick even after you vacuum your carpet. In fact, many people claim that the smell of these carpet deodorizers are worse than the original smells, and repent using them.

So instead of buying some carpet deodorizer sprays that you won’t use again, its better to use some natural carpet deodorizer. These homemade carpet deodorizers are much cheaper and effective than the ones you find in stores.

The basic carpet deodorizer

The most simple and elementary carpet deodorizer is baking soda. All you have to do is to sprinkle it on the carpet and leave it there for an hour or so. It absorbs the odor to give your room a much fresher feeling and smell.

However if you want to give some strong and good scents to your home, all you have to do is to add some flowers or essential oils to the baking soda. The best way to do this is to buy a large bag or box of baking soda. Buying in bulk makes your homemade carpet deodorizer even cheaper.

Then, look for some sort of shaker like a mason jar with holes in it, a large spice container or just empty your commercial carpet deodorizer and fill it up with your homemade carpet deodorizer.

If you have no container with holes in it, don’t fret. You can pour your mixture into any container and scoop up the mixture with your hand to evenly spread on the carpet. The only reason it is preferable to have holes in the container is because it makes it easier to sprinkle the mixture.

Now that you have found a container, you have to add some dried flowers or essential oils to the mix. If you prefer, you can always add both flower and oil to the mix too. The most popular and better flower choices are lavender, rose petals, chamomile, eucalyptus or cinnamon.

These flowers, leaves and oils are easily available online, and at local health stores. While its possible to leave the leaves and flowers whole while adding to the mix, it gives a better fragrance when crushed or ground to a fine powder. In case of essential oils, a few drops are sufficient for the mix.

Just like baking soda absorbs odors, it also absorbs these scents. So the next time you vacuum, you just have to shake this homemade carpet deodorizer on the carpet and let it stand for an hour, or preferably overnight. On vacuuming, you get fresh, scented carpets in your home.
